Introduction to the Gloucester Griffins Junior C Lacrosse Team

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I draft this letter to all the players and parents of the players who have been assigned to the Gloucester Griffins Junior C Lacrosse team. I have enjoyed the opportunity to watch the players work hard and compete for positions with the Gloucester Griffins Junior B Team and now that the Jr B roster has been confirmed it is time for the Jr C team to get down to business and prepare for the inaugural season for Jr C lacrosse in eastern Ontario.

The Gloucester Lacrosse Association applied for and received Ontario Lacrosse Association approval to own and operate a Jr C team franchise in the Eastern Division of the Ontario Jr C Lacrosse League. The Eastern Division is made up of teams from Kahnawake, Cornwall, Brockville, Kingston, Nepean and Gloucester. All lacrosse players registered with the GLA who on January 1, 2011 where 16 to 20 years of age are eligible to play for the Gloucester Jr C team provided OLA registration forms are completed and approved by the governing body.

The GLA Jr C team has virtually replaced the GLA intermediate competitive team. When the GLA decided to pursue the opportunity to secure a Jr C franchise in the newly formed Eastern Division of the Ontario Jr C Lacrosse League, it was to enhance the development opportunity for post midget players who wish to play lacrosse at a higher level, particularly Jr B and higher. Under the Jr C program players will compete in a Jr lacrosse environment that includes:

    1. Being a partner in a Jr C league that is regulated by the OLA and Jr C Council,
    2. Competing within an established six-team division,
    3. Playing a confirmed 16 game regular season schedule with guaranteed participation in a divisional playoff season,
    4. Competing for a provincial championship as a divisional playoff champion,
    5. Playing games refereed by individuals with high level referee certification, and
    6. Playing three 20-minute stop time periods of lacrosse with overtime (period(s)) for tied games during both the regular season and playoff season.

All these attributes will separate Jr C lacrosse from the Minor Lacrosse Intermediate Program and will provide the players a much better opportunity to play the game at a higher level and prepare themselves to play higher-level lacrosse.
