Competitive Box Lacrosse
About the Griffins Competitive Program
The Gloucester Griffins Competitive lacrosse program will be celebrating our 35th season in 2011. The GLA is once again proud to host the Ray Broadworth Memorial Minor Lacrosse Tournament in July 2011.
As part of the GLA's ongoing development of Lacrosse in the region, Field Lacrosse will be part of the Competitive lacrosse program for the 2011 season for the Bantam and Midget levels. Players assigned to the competitive 1 teams at Bantam and Midget will be expected to participate in our Spring Field Team. Players from the Competitive 2 teams will be used to fill out the rosters as needed.
While the GLA does recognize the additional commitment this requires from both the players and their parents, it mirrors the highly successful programs in southern Ontario. The GLA believes it is important to provide this experience for the players and to continue our competitive development.
More details on the Field Lacrosse program can be found here. The field portion of the Competitive program will begin April 15th 2011. Players can expect a few introductory sessions, some local games vs. Nepean and possibly Akwesasne, one "hosting weekend" in Eastern Ontario and one "travel" weekend to Southern Ontario. These games will determine if our teams will qualify for the Provincial Field Lacrosse Championship.
The GLA has also commited to one summer field lacrosse tournament, the "1812 Shoot Out" in Sackets Harbor NY July 9th and 10th 2011. All Competitive 1 players Novice through Midget will be expected to participate and rosters will be rounded out with invitations to players on the 2 team.
The Box Lacrosse season will consist of approximately 16 games against others in Zone 5 which includes Akwesasne, Brockville, Cornwall, Kahnawake, Kemptville, Kingston, Nepean and Tyendinaga.
Griffins competitive teams will be attending 4 tournaments during the summer with the culmination of the season taking place at the Ontario Provincial Lacrosse Championships (www.ontariolacrossefestival.com) in August.
The proposed tournaments this year are:
Paperweight: Cornwall
Tyke Competitive 1 : Cornwall, Kingston, ,Gloucester, Nepean
Novice Competitive 1: Brampton, Caledon, Gloucester, Nepean
PeeWee Competitive 1 Peterbourgh, Brampton, Gloucester, Nepean
Bantam Competitive 1: Brampton, Caledon, Gloucester, Nepean
Midget Competitive 1 : Peterbourgh, Brampton, Gloucester, Nepean
Competitive 2 Teams (all): Caledon, Ajax, Gloucester, Nepean
As per the GLA policy, the GLA will not consider requests to play at a different level than the one assigned by the head coach after try outs. Competitive players are expected to play where assigned, to be committed to practices, zone games and tournaments. It will be very difficult to play competitive lacrosse and another spring or summer sport. It is expected that the Gloucester Griffins program and activities will be considered the priority sports commitment for our players. If players aren't showing commitment required to participate at the competitive level they will be referred to the House League program.
